In the 18th century, around 1765 Greenville SC consisted of a trading post and gristmill which were built by Richard Pearis. The Greenville SC area largely consisted of a few settlers and Cherokee Indians. In 1797, Lemuel J. Alston attempted to develop the Greenville SC real estate area but was unsuccessful. In 1815 Vardy McBee purchased what later would become Greenville SC for a total of 11,000 acres for a sum of approximately 27,000 dollars. In 1873, the Atlanta and Charlotte Air Line railway opened with a direct path through Greenville South Carolina. This helped to facilitate the movement of the textile industries from the North to the South, resulting in Greenville South Carolina becoming known as the Textile Capital of the World, a distinction that prevailed through the last quarter of the twentieth century and helped Greenville Sc real estate become more valuable. Greenville County officially began in 1786.
Wilson Cook was a prominent member of the Greenville South Carolina District Republican Party following the Civil War. He served in the State House from 1868 to 1870. Mr. Cook was a native of NC and came to Greenville by Vardry McBee as a slave. In order to amass money Mr. Cook worked after hours and saved enough money to increase his prominence in the Greenville South Carolina area. He became a free man and soon owned real estate that included a general store, a tannery, and in 1881 was the largest black taxpayer Greenville County. Mr. Cook also founded the Methodist Episcopal Church in Greenville SC.
