Simpsonville neighborhood still growing

Greenville Sc real estate in Autumn Trace is a mix of homes in various stages of completion: those with vinyl and brick fronts, plywood fronts and no insides and just-poured foundations (homes are completed at this time).

Started about a year ago off of Pollard Road, Autumn Trace was annexed as part of the fast-growing city of Simpsonville.

Ricky Thomas and his wife Lolita moved here from a suburb of Dallas in May.

He said it was a little odd moving to a neighborhood still under construction, but there were no major problems because they don't work late or start too early on the houses.

"It's been a good neighborhood so far," said Thomas, 39.

About 40 homes are up and about that many more are being worked on in what will become a 251-house subdivision with prices from $150,000 to $270,000, said Donna Brown, an agent with one of the two builders.

Brown's D.R. Horton Homes is building lots 1-103, and MDC Homes is building the rest. A common junior-Olympic pool, clubhouse and a set of swings and wood playground equipment in the middle.

Brown said people have been moving in for the past six months as construction continues. People of all ages are buying the houses, which feature more than 25 styles between the two builders.

Many are buying their third or fourth home, Brown said

Margarite Lara Paris is on house number four.

She was planting trees in her yard a recent afternoon as workers in the unfinished house next to her rolled out sod. Her blue jeans were soaked from the knees down from where the sprinkler system peppered her.

She just moved to Autumn Trace and was still unpacking. Her wood blinds were not up downstairs, but her two cats, Precious and Jewels, were busy checking out their new digs.

Paris, 44, said she moved here from the east side of Greer because it was quick access to state Highway 14 and Interstate 385, but traffic wasn't as bad.

"It's a great location," she said. "You have easy access to all sides of town."

Being new to a new neighborhood, she hasn't had the chance to talk to many neighbors, but the ones she met so far were nice, she said.

"They are friendly people here," she said. "People have come over to offer help."

Most importantly, though, it is only a five minute drive from Golden Park, an amusement park featuring bowling and mini-golf. That's a big hit with her 6-year-old son David, she said.

"He likes to hit the balls," she said.

Most of the houses are four bedroom with three bathrooms, a dining room, a living room, a garage, a small yard.

Of the Horton homes, the most popular style is the "Avalon," which features hardwood floors in the kitchen, walk-in closets in all the bedrooms, a stand-up shower and separate bath in the master bedroom suite, 30-foot high ceiling in the living room, and ceiling fans in each room.

An additional bathroom can be added on the second floor, Brown said.

Linda Horner, a division manager with MDC, said a major reason the subdivision is selling well is because builders left a backdrop of trees.

And of course, location is the key.

Russell Davis, 24, agreed.

He and his parents moved here from Easley.

It's a quicker commute to his job as a conductor on Norfolk-Southern trains. He is based out of Greenville, but rides freight trains two or three days at a time.
