Residents watch Bryson Meadows blossom
Shawn Vaught believes he has the best of both worlds in his house at Bryson Meadows in Simpsonville, SC in Greenville County SC.
He has a house he loves, in a community that gives the feeling of the country while offering easy access to shops, things to do and good schools. Wanting to avoid the bustle of Greenville's Haywood Road, he chose Bryson Meadows after shopping around other subdivisions.
Valerie Tate's choice of Bryson Meadows was a major decision.
"I felt it was time," said Tate, 38. She's a first time home-buyer with a sense of excitement about the step she has taken.
"I watched it start as a pile of dirt. I saw them pour the cement slab.." she said of the community. "I like the newness and being able to choose a lot."
With about 20 homes either occupied or in some stage of building, Bryson Meadows, Simpsonville, South Carolina is a work in progress.
The main road, Garfield Lane, ends in a cul de sac, and that's about where Kristina and Marty Wagoner, both 34, have been watching their home's construction progress.
Lovers of wooded areas, "We picked the cul de sac on purpose. This gives more of the natural terrain," said Kristina. They make a periodic sojourn to the developing property to track progress.
Tate, the Wagoners and Vaught are three of the newly transplanted residents who have recently moved into Bryson Meadows subdivision, a new Ryland community off Howard Road.
With homes priced in the $100,000 range, Bryson Meadows offers four of five models, has easy access to Interstate 385 and plans recreational facilities on the sprawling site that is still in the early stages of its first phase.
But the unpaved roadways are laying the footprint of the subdivision expected to grow to about 200 homes, according to the on-site agent.
Tate, who works at Caterpillar Co. nearby, and just moved in, said she is "still getting the bugs out."
Still, she added, "I like the community, the newness, and being able to choose a lot."
That choice was a factor motivating the Wagoners.
"Being early has given us the pick of lots," Mrs. Wagoner said. In fact their property is the last home under construction on Garfield . Beyond them lies nothing but trees.
The couple have chosen the Montgomery, with 2,044 square feet. They added a sunroom and a bonus room in which Marty plans to install media eqiupment.
"Apart from the remoteness," says Kristina, "I've seen the diversity and how they are going to have a racially mixed community."
Ryland Homes assists home buyers with incentives like a 1 percent down payment that helps some first-timers take that first step.
During the first phase, yards are planted with Bermuda sod to present a finished look while construction and road building continues in the woods beyond.
Liz McCormick and her family moved from California.
Family members living in Fountain Inn gave the mother of four the nudge she needed to relocate to South Carolina four months ago. Her mother came to a grandson's graduation, thought the area was a great place, decided to move back, and urged McCormick to do so, too.
"It's a beautiful area, different from California," McCormick said, as one of her four children leaned against her.
McCormick said her mother-in-law flew her to the Greenville area to look at homes. The Bryson Meadows home she selected was the last one she looked at just before returning to California.
"I enjoy it," she said of the new location. "I'm glad I moved."
