Devenger Place offers serene living

With its individual home designs on generous lots, and winding, tree-lined streets, Devenger Place in Greenville South Carolina hasn't lost its appeal in 30 years, residents say.

One of Greenville County's older subdivisions, the Eastside neighborhood of 600 homes encompasses diverse architectural styles - traditional Colonials, Victorians, an English Tudor or two and modern designs - all under $200,000.

"I like that myself; otherwise, I would have gotten a townhouse," said Connie Ryll, a transplant from Massachusetts who has lived in Devenger less than a year.

"We're retired. When we came looking, we had left two feet of snow," Ryll said. "Everything here is flowers."

She and her husband chose a Colonial on Windward Way, where the homes reflect a variety of styles. "It's a nice-looking community. I think it holds its value," said Ryll, who is president of the neighborhood association. "It's pretty upbeat, family-oriented and friendly. There's a closeness in this subdivision," she said. "It's really a great place to live."

Dannette Poole, a young mother, said "the quietness" is what sold her and her husband Corey on the family-friendly subdivision.

The Pooles moved to Greenville from Baltimore about three years ago with their six children.

"We drove around, and we were really impressed with the neighborhood," she said. "Where we're from, there's a lot of traffic. It's really serene here. It's really important for us to raise our kids in a quiet environment."

Located not far from Pelham Road, Devenger Place has easy access to schools, a library branch, restaurants and a variety of churches. The subdivision also sports a pool, playground and basketball and tennis courts. (Membership in the family center can range from $250 to $275 a year.)

Although near a major traffic artery, Devenger Place maintains a sense of privacy. Established in 1973, it's tucked away behind intermittent new subdivisions off Hudson Road and is accessible from Devenger, Brigham or Phillips roads.

Mrs. Poole said she knew they were home the first time they looked at their house, and "my husband took his shoes off and walked around."

The neighborhood's friendliness and diversity are additional reasons that she and her family are sold on Devenger Place. Mrs. Poole said she enjoys chatting over the proverbial fence with her neighbor. "I'm not as involved in the neighborhood as I would like, because I am either at school or at church."

With the exception of their 4-year-old, the Pooles' children, including a set of twins, attend Pelham Road Elementary, Greenville Middle and Eastside High.

Its convenience to restaurants, particularly along nearby Pelham and Haywood roads, is another benefit residents mention to recommend their neighborhood. "There's a restaurant on every corner," said Ryll. "I've never seen so many restaurants."

Ryll is so committed to maintaining the quality of life in Devenger Place that she took on the responsibility of heading the neighborhood organization, called the Devenger Place Family Center of Greenville, Inc., to prevent it from being handed over to an outside manager. The center has recently beautified the entrances to the subdivision with plantings and landscaping.

Easy on the eyes, friendly, family-oriented, conveniently located - all of these traits attracted Maggie Dominic, a retired teacher, Greenville South Carolina and to Devenger. Out for an afternoon stroll last week, she said after living in Bethesda, Md., for many years, she and her husband wanted to relocate to the Greenville area 20 years ago. That's how long they have been Devenger Place residents.

Even then, she said, "There was a nice mix of people, and the neighborhood was convenient to everything." Today, the Dominics still participate in a supper club of Devenger neighbors with whom they socialize on a regular basis.

Long-term residents suggest to Jenny Smith the inter-generational character of Devenger Place.

"We enjoy the fact that there are so many different generations. There's people who raised their kids and retired here," said Smith, but there also people who have young children, she said, and others who are returning to the community to live in the homes they grew up in.

"It gives more of a community feeling," she said.
