Judson Mills just outside of downtown Greenville South Carolina is a  former mill community.  Due to its proximity to downtown Greenville SC it is attracting a lot of interest from home buyers and investors. Greenville  real estate near downtown is piquing everyone's interest.

The Judson community lies on the western side of Greenville County about half a mile west of the Greenville South Carolina  city limits.

In 1925, the community, like many Greenville mill communities, was enjoying prosperity. Many residents worked at the nearby Judson Mill, which opened its doors in 1912 at a time when the textile industry was rapidly developing in the Upstate.

By the end of the 1960s, however, as more homeowners began to move out and more renters moved in, the neighborhood began changing. By the 1980s, it was in a serious decline.

That was before residents and county officials at the Greenville County Redevelopment Authority began working together to bring money into Judson in the early 1990s.

A 1993 profile by the authority of 464 homes in the community showed only two units in standard condition. A high level of poverty, unemployment and renter-occupied housing existed.

The redevelopment authority targeted the community for rehabilitation, renovating old homes and building new ones. Home ownership began to rise and so did the pride and community spirit residents wanted.

The authority spent close to eight years in Judson and spent more than $12 million building new homes, providing low-interest loans to people to rehabilitate their Greenville SC real estate homes or buying  Greenville SC real estate homes to rehabilitate and sell to low- or middle-income families.

Real estate in this section of Greenville SC are selling in the $50,000 price range. Most of the new or reworked homes have three or four bedrooms, two bathrooms and 1,000-1,200 square feet.
