History of Daniel Island Prior to 1670 the Etiwan Tribe inhabited the Island. Seventy years later, in 1740, Daniel Island was named after one of its largest landholders, Robert Daniell. In 1947, Harry Frank Guggenheim purchases Daniel Island for 70,000 dollars and uses it for hunting and cattle ranching. When Guggenheim dies in 1971 he left Daniel Island to the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation of New York. In 1989, the concept for Daniel Island is released. Two years later, the city of Charleston annexes Daniel Island. One year after that, in 1992, the Ports Authority purchases 800 acres along the Cooper River. In 1993, exit 23 off of 526 allows access to Daniel Island onto Clements Ferry Road. This has played a large part in the progression of the Island. In 1995, the development of the Island begins. In 1998, Bishop Englund's high school opens its doors on Daniel Island, having moved from the Charleston Peninsula. In 2000, Blackbaud moves to Daniel Island.
